My sister goes to West, and she tells me how much she loves it there. They have hour-long lunches (unlike Cherokee Heights MIddle School), and she tells me about how kind and likable all of the teachers are. Even the gym teacher is incredibly thoughtful and observes the students to see what activities they enjoy the most. She also had a recent project where she'd get to choose what she wanted to do as like a fun menu styled thing. At West, they actually value kids enjoying and participating in their education (unlike Cherokee Heights Middle School). Overall, this school has been an incredible experience for my sister and I'm VERY excited to leave Cherokee and go there.

Terrible, horrible School. Never go here, ever. Administrators of this school are greedy for money

I don’t recommend you bring your child here they promised me I could graduate a year early if I had 220 credits I have Over 224 and I’m a junior it states in the orientation they give they try to graduate your students a year early NO they do NOT they lie to your child and get ur child’s hopes up like they did mine im currently in the looks for another school I don’t understand how other juniors are graduating but I can’t this school always picked at me about anything very rude!

We feel incredibly fortunate to be part of the SCDS community. Both of our children attend this school, and their growth—both academically and personally—has been remarkable. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to challenge and nurture gifted learners, allowing each child to truly thrive in their own way. What stands out most is how the school not only focuses on advanced academics but also fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a deep sense of curiosity. The leadership under the principal, Kim, is outstanding. She is deeply committed, approachable, and brings a clear vision that prioritizes both academic excellence and the well-being of every student. Her leadership has brought a sense of stability and direction that we truly appreciate as parents. It’s disappointing to see some of the extreme negative reviews, as they don’t reflect our experience at all. In fact, our family has consistently felt heard, supported, and part of a vibrant, positive community. The teachers are exceptional—passionate about what they do, and always attentive to each child’s needs. If you’re looking for a place where your child will be intellectually challenged, supported, and inspired, SCDS is a truly special environment. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to send our children here.

There is a 4 th grade teacher there that used SHAMING STUDENTS as part of her daily routine. I am extremely disappointed in this teacher. Can’t wait for the school year to end so my student never has to go there again. I would be more specific if I were not concerned for MORE retaliation.

Oh where can i even start? First of all, my student comes home CRYING about the bullying and harassment at this school. Racism, sexism, oh you name it. All she wants to do is learn, and all she gets is the unprofessionalism of this school. She’s even tried talking to someone! And guess what, nothing. Had to get her a therapist because of this insane bullying. And what does the teachers, principals, ANYONE do?! Nothing. Absolutely, nothing. Don’t take your kids to this school.

This school has had multiple threats (bomb, guns, violence) and they have done nothing to appropriately to address the matter. The building's electrical wires are exposed. There are also biased restrictions toward graduation accessories, such as not being able to wear cords from respected and globally recognized nonprofit organizations that promote the future of students. As well, the teachers teach from a scripted curriculum.

My daughter struggles with anxiety and managing her emotions. The social workers, counselors, and her outside counselor have made a tremendous difference in her life. I cannot thank them enough. She was also behind in reading after COVID, and the reading specialist has her back on track. Great team at this school!

This school is terrible. The principal is completely incompetent. Teachers have too many kids per classroom to teach effectively. Safety is a concern at this school. The only good thing at this school is the counselors. Currently looking at moving to get out of this district all together.

Kendall greens high school helped me graduate faster and they were super helpful and supportive. I’m so glad I switched into this school and will never regret it.

Worst school with worst management. Teacher took possession of my sons necklace and never communicated with us and when we tried to confront them principal didnt do anything other than filing a police report to their convenience. And has taken no actions against the teacher. Which it makes me wonder if they actually cover all their wrongdoing

Great neighborhood school! I wish people in West Ashley would stop glamorizing these CCSD "choice" schools (honestly, just because a school is part of a choice lottery doesn't mean it's higher quality --some are, most aren't) and get back to the zoned schools. It'd be so nice if children of the same neighborhood all went to school together instead of spread over 5+ schools in the West Ashley area -- especially when you have a zoned school like Oakland! Oakland has built its own little community even given the somewhat vast area that this school is zoned. Definitely not a school to be overlooked in the kindergarten consideration process. The PTO has really stepped up in recent years and there are so many more activities involving the entire family. Also, has an outstanding CD program!

Amazing school loved the experience and definitely recommend

We love Oakland! Our son has excelled each year with his academics at this school. The staff/teachers truly care about the kids. They make sure that your child is prepared for their next grade next grade level. We are so grateful for this school, and we can’t wait four our younger kids to attend. Go Orcas!
